This is cheesy. Embarrassingly so. But after studying Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic, and manifestation and the law of attraction, I have to tell you…. I am not always the best at being positive BUT there is a reason that we have to be positive sometimes. You cannot walk to your writing space like you’re gearing up for battle. We don’t have to be tortured to be writers (though let’s face it, many of us are. I embrace my tortured soul). If writing is painful, if it’s like wringing sweat from a dried cloth, if it drives you mad, I want you to think about that.
How can you become excited to greet the page? How can you view this activity with wonder: of all the assignments you’ve received in this life, your main assignment is to tell stories?! To make up whole universes? To channel messages across time and space. And while for many of us the work we do wont’ affect the whole world, it will always affect our whole world. Not to mention that writing, just like any form of art, is susceptible to future discoveries.
I write with the knowledge that my work might only end up being for me, but I’m okay with that. I also know that my work is good. It’s good because I made it. It’s good because I love it. It might capture only my heart, or many hearts. I am open to all possibilities. And who knows, maybe some day a manuscript of mine will be unearthed & hailed as a “forgotten classic.” You never know!!! Just trust your artistic instincts. Show up to the page with a smile. You are playing with words. You are creating a universe. You need to put out the energy into the world that you LOVE to write, and writing LOVES you. Otherwise, why are you writing at all?
